SHEPHERDS OF BETHLEHEM – THE FIRST PASTORS!

Monday, December 26th, 2011

We are all familiar with the wonderful Christmas story and the Shepherds of Bethlehem!  One of my best friends was born right outside those fields and runs a Middle Eastern theme restaurant in Springfield called “The Holy Land Diner”.
Over the years, my conversations with him have been really full of joy at the confirmation of the almost 2000 year old story….the story when God sent His holy angels to preach the first Gospel sermon. The landing of this Angelic Host on Shepherds Field (which is still around as you can see) is significant for many reasons!
These messengers from Heaven, could have announced the Birth of Jesus to kings and satraps and governors. They could have announced it to the priests in the temple, the teachers of the law and pharisees and the righteous (in their own eyes) religious folks in Jerusalem. But they didn’t! Why?
Why did the Holy God of Heaven select dirty, poor and outcast men, who worked from March to November in hard scrabble (as you can see again, from this photo) land among animals, animal waste and more. These men were kept out of Jerusalem almost exclusively! They were banned from entering any Temple of God to worship, because they were ceremonially unclean, under the 613 Laws of Moses in the Torah/Pentateuch! They were around dead sheep at times and animal waste, all the time. So the priests and religious authorities banned them!
These are whom God chose! It is a symbol for what He would do in the Life of Christ, not just in the short three year ministry He had on earth, but ever since He died and rose again!
The first sermon of Christ started like this “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed…(Luke 4:18)….and you can add to that “the outcast, unwanted and those left behind by the world!!
The Lord also chose the Shepherds for a simple yet VERY CRUCIAL mission, even though these men were unaware of the reason! The word shepherd here in the Christmas passage from Luke 2, is “poimenes”or…get this – “Pastor” in the English!

In one fell swoop, God revealed Himself, the Gospel and the Heavens to lowly outcasts and then anointed them the Pastors of the First Worship service – right on the harsh Shepherd’s field in Bethlehem.

ANNA THE PROPHETESS – EXAMPLE OF TRUE WORSHIP, FIRST EVANGELIST!

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
(Luke 2:36-38 ESV)

These short three verses in the New Testament are hardly spoken in many Christmas, or any other messages, in the modern church. However, they pack a powerful piece of revelation for the believer.

Let us not miss what happened here:
Anna became a widow after being married only 7 years, after a living a life of purity and integrity.
Anna did not go out and decided to remarry or start a family.
Anna dedicated the rest of her life in the service and worship of the Lord her God.
Anna took up physical, emotional and spiritual residence in the House of the Lord.
Anna continually went without food because the Word of God was her bread.
Anna  petitioned the LORD with prayers and supplications, day and night for 84 years, without fail.
Anna’s faithfulness was noticed by the LORD who rewarded her with being the one of only two people in Jerusalem counted of any importance, to meet the Christ Child.
Anna prophesied over Him and gave thanks to Our Great God for allowing her to see this Miraculous encounter.
Anna could not hold back the Gospel, after meeting the Baby Jesus. She knew right then and there Who He was and Why she was allowed to meet Him.
Anna proclaimed that good news to all who would listen, and who had looked for the Messiah, whose arrival they anticipated.

This is what amazingly occurred here! Anna was not just sitting in an air-conditioned temple ‘pew’ waiting on God to give her a sign. She was not like most western Christians these days!

Hers was a life totally sold out to God.
Hers was a life totally submitted to His Perfect Law and Will.
Hers was a life tied to the Promises of His Word.
Hers was a life thankfully rejoicing in those Promises.

Her motives were pure. Her conscience was clean. She put away the deeds of the flesh for a higher purpose.
